Specimen Requirements

Specimen Type: Nasopharyngeal Collection. Tube/Container: M4 Viral Transport Media
Instructions:
1. Gently insert the swab through the nostril to the posterior nasopharynx. Do not use excessive force, pressure, or bending swab samples from patients as this may result in accidental breakage of the swab shaft at the molded break point of the swab.
2. Gently roll the swab against the inside of the posterior nasopharynx several times and then remove the swab.
3. Repeat the procedure with the SAME swab in the second nostril
4. Place the swab in Viral Transport Media
5. Bend or cut the shaft of the swab so that the lid can close securely without interfering with the threads on the rim of the VTM Lid, secure the lid firmly
6. Send specimen ASAP to the Laboratory for processing
