Specimen Requirements

If collecting both maternal and fetal specimens, clearly label each specimen. A separate order must be entered for each specimen.

 

Specimen Type: Placenta

Container/Tube: Culture swab in sterile culture transport tube

Specimen Volume: Swab

Collection Instructions:

1. Specimen source is required.

2. Prepare site: wash margins well with surgical soap followed by 70% alcohol.
3. Remove cap with swab attached.
4. Collect swab specimen from placenta.
5. Return swab to transport tube, and crush ampule to ensure specimen preservation.

6. Label tube with patient’s name (first and last), medical record number or date of birth, specimen source, and date and time of collection.
