Specimen Requirements

Specimen must arrive in laboratory within 30 minutes of draw. Specimen Type: Whole blood Container/Tube: Light-blue top (3.2% sodium citrate) Specimen Volume: 90% full tube Collection Instructions: 1. When using butterfly, draw a discard tube prior to sodium citrate tube. 2. Invert several times to mix blood. 3. Do not centrifuge. 4. Tube must remain stoppered. 5. Avoid grossly hemolyzed, icteric, or lipemic specimen. Clotted or hemolyzed blood or insufficient specimen is not acceptable.

Reference Values

230 ng/mL The negative predictive value for results 230 ng/mL is 100% to rule out deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism. Other circumstances which lead to elevated D-dimer results are: old age, pregnancy, disseminated intravascular coagulation, coronary disease, thrombolytic treatment, cancer, liver disease, infection, inflammation, and hematomas. However, no clinical diagnosis should be based on the result of a D-dimer test alone. Clinical signs and other relevant information should be included.
